It’s been awhile since seeing victory circle, but
Kevin Richards found his way there Saturday night, winning the INSSA
100 at State Line Speedway.
Richards posted the fastest qualifying lap of 13.393 to start
the day off with INSSA point’s leader, Dave Garber and Corey Allard,
second and third, respectively.
Jessie Taylor and Kit VanBuskirk led the inverted
field to green, with Taylor jumping into the lead.
Jeff Little took over second place and started his pursuit of
Taylor. The two raced
hard, as Jack Morse moved into third and Richards fourth.
Little got the lead on lap 13, as Morse and Richards followed
into second and third.
Just a few laps later, Richards took the top spot.
As Richards now had smooth sailing, the battle
heated up behind him.
Morse moved under Little for the pass, but Little liked the high
groove. The two battled
side by side for the nearly 20 laps, as Garber, Allard and Fenton
could only sit back and watch.
Morse came out on top and Garber followed him past Little.
Morse and Garber battled for the next several laps, with
Garber getting by at nearly the half way point.
Allard was next to challenge Morse, as they raced hard for
nearly ten more laps before Allard took over third.
A hard fought, emotional night for Morse, racing in the
memory of Samantha Jones, a young Spokane woman killed in a tragic
traffic accident last weekend in Montana.
As he cruised through lapped traffic, Garber and
Allard had plenty of ground to make up to catch to Richards.
A yellow for Dan Yonke, who spun on lap 62 with glowing brake
rotors, slowed the field, allowing Garber and Allard to make up a
little ground. The race
continued with several lapped cars between them and Richards.
Andrew Zimmer was the unfortunate victim in the next yellow
flag, as tight racing saw lead lap cars of Allard and Fenton get
sideways between turns three and four, collecting Zimmer in the
melee.
When racing resumed, Garber was glued to
Richards’ rear bumper.
The next yellow flew at lap 87 as Kameron McKeehan went into the
corner too deep and got into Taylor causing him to spin.
A little over 13 laps left for Garber to make any kind of
move on Richards.
At the end of the night, Garber gave him a run
for his money, but Richards pulled a couple car lengths ahead for
the win. Allard took the final podium spot in third, with Fenton and
Morse rounding out the top 5.
The next racing action for INSSA is Saturday,
September 19th at State Line Speedway for the 2009 Season
Championship.
